I’m sitting in a workshop about marketing at a hotel by the airport. It took me longer to get here than expected thanks to the rain. Why do people drive so slow in the rain? It’s very frustrating. Anways, Dave, the gentleman giving the presentation, tells us to be ourselves when we write, we need to share and be funny. I’m thinking…funny…I don’t know. Having employees is serious business and frankly I’m not that funny. I am corny though, does that count?
For example one of my favorite jokes is “What did what one plow horse say to the other?”…”Let’s get hitched.”
I know, I know, you are probably groaning while I’m laughing. It’s ok I get that a lot from friends, family and witnesses to my bad sense of humor.
Are you still reading?
I’m guessing when it comes to your employees you are thinking the same thing I did – business is serious, I can’t be funny. True the part of making money, profits, having people and dealing with expectations is serious. That doesn’t mean you have to be Joe Friday with “just the facts”. What would really happen if you were yourself? Funny or Corny…dramatic or slapstick…emotional or deadpan? Do you think your team would think less or you? Or would you be more human and one of them?
One way to find out. Try it out, let me know what happens. I know your team will enjoy the “human” side of you.
Don’t leave leadership up to chance, let’s work together to find your “authentic” style and grow your employee engagement. Write to me now to set up a 15 minutes call to discuss what’s happening with you and your team. I can be reached at [email protected]
