Finding Your Leadership Style

Finding Your Leadership Style

Summary: Whether a new leader or becoming more effective – it starts with finding your “internal leader”.

You may be new to leadership or we may be interested in being more effective as a leader, either way it is important to determine your style. I almost hesitate to call it a style since that makes it sound like it changes depending on the weather.  Since I do believe leadership is more profound that what you wear on the outside for the world to see and is more of a reflection of who you really are. Let’s call it finding your “internal leader”.

As human being we have our own set of values and principals that have guided us through life. They have brought us great success and now we need to translate that into who are as a leader.

Here’s a quick exercise to get your moving in the right direction.

Describe your “internal leader”. Jot down words that you want to describe as a leader – no limits. Words like: ethical, caring, empathetic, demanding, coach, guide, strict, extrovert, introvert, etc. Need help with words a good source is Strengths Finders 2.0 by Tom Rath of Gallup.

Step into other shoes.  Step away from yourself for a moment and imagine how others see you, as if you were watching yourself on TV. What do they see? What do they experience? Since they do not know what is driving you and can only form opinions based on what they see and experience. What words would they use?

Is there a match or disconnect? Compare your two lists. What do you see? Are there many similarities? Are their disconnects? What do you like and don’t like?

Create your plan of action. If you had disconnects or dislikes, you will want to make a plan of action to correct. I know, this is easier said than done.  You will need to take it day by day and understand you will take a few steps backwards.

Finding your “internal leader” will take time, patience and awareness. Don’t get discouraged, persistence is key.
